Frequently Asked Questions regarding our cosmetic
medical services

What is laser therapy and how does it work?

Laser therapy is a safe, effective, and commonly used treatment, providing optimal results in areas such as the removal of unwanted hair, skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, leg veins and the removal of age/sun spots.

Lasers work by delivering an intense beam of light that is absorbed by the skin. This light is converted to heat and is absorbed by the cells being targeted, while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. Candela lasers feature a patented skin-cooling device for even greater patient comfort and safety - and better results.

Are laser and light-based treatments safe?

Yes, laser and light-based treatments have been used for many years for a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures. Candela, the most trusted name in the industry, has pioneered the development of some of the safest and most effective technologies for skin care.

What will my treatment be like?

You and your practitioner will wear safety glasses to protect your eyes during the procedure. The medical provider will use a small hand piece that touches your skin to deliver the light. You may feel a light spray of coolant on your skin before each laser pulse. The procedure is tolerated well by most patients, however the application of topical numbing cream can be used if pain is a concern for the patient. The procedure can take minutes to as long as an hour depending on the areas being treated.

How long will my treatment take, and how many treatments will I need?

Every treatment, like every patient, is unique. The number of sessions depends on the treatment you require and the condition of your skin. For hair removal, multiple treatments are required, as the process is most effective when the hair follicle is in the active growth cycle. Other conditions may clear up in only one treatment. The procedure can take minutes to as long as an hour depending on the area being treated. During your complimentary consultation, your medical provider can discuss this more accurately with you based on what your concerns are.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal treatments?

Patients scheduled for hair removal should avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing for four to six weeks prior to treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus and are scheduled for treatment, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. Also, your skin should be clean-shaven and your skin thoroughly cleansed and dried, removing any makeup, creams, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products before laser treatment. The areas being treated should not be exposed to sunlight or tanning booth light prior or immediately after your laser treatment. Before your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). Your medical provider can discuss your preparation with you in more detail at your complimentary consultation.

What precautions should I take before or after my treatment?

In general, avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks before treatment, and again after treatment until your physician allows it. After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above) to the areas that were treated. Care should be taken in the first few days following treatments to avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated area with abrasive skin cleansers. Any redness or swelling should resolve within a few hours to a few days. Consult your practitioner for specific precautions that relate to your individualized treatment plan.

Are there any adverse side effects to laser or light-based treatments?

In general, most procedures have a low risk of adverse side effects. Some patients experience pigment changes in the skin color. If this occurs, the skin will typically return to normal pigmentation over time. All treatment results are individual. Be sure to discuss potential side effects with your practitioner at your complimentary consultation.

Is my laser or light-based treatment covered by my medical insurance?

Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures. However, consult your practitioner for more information at your complimentary consultation.
